Happy New Year, everyone! This has the potential to be one, rough, year. Let’s make the best of it and bury ourselves in books. Shall we?
As readers, we get such a kick out of our first book of the year! SO much goes into it. It has to be memorable, maybe even life changing. It has to be enough to take us well into the year and not stall us dead in our tracks. I often hope that it will set the tone for my year but in all honesty, we read so much that it’s an ever-evolving TBR list, isn’t it?
Well, I decided to read The Brothers Karamazov as my first book of 2025! Murakami is one of my fave authors and every year he lists this book as one of his favorites. I will finally be getting to it!
Thanks to Sheila for hosting First Book.

That is a heavy book to start the year with. I hope you like it!

Only a few pages in but already I can see why Murakami always mentions Dostoevsky.

Happy New Year to you and your family, Ti! And, wow, hope enjoy your first book. Mine is a reread of a the first book in a favorite mystery series – The Crossing Places. Enjoying it though. 😉

The Brothers Karamazov is surprisingly easy to read. Maybe I am an anomaly.

You picked quite a book for your first, didn’t you?! Good luck! Mine is something I plan to read over the course of a year (Amy Tan’s Backyard Bird Chronicles). I’m definitely planning to hunker down and do a lot of reading this year, staying far away from the news. Hope you had a good visit with your kiddos. Happy New Year, Ti!

That Tan book looks really interesting. She’s been talking about it on social media.
I am five chapters into Brothers and it’s not at all what I was expecting but in a good way. I’m really into it but also reading a book club book (Bright Young Women), The God of the Woods and a non fiction book by TerKeurst called Uninvited.
The visit with the kids was good. My daughter’s flight was canceled so we had one extra day with her.

Happy New Year! That sounds like a solid read to kick off 2025. I also enjoy putting thought into my first read of 2025 – I went with A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher.

That’s a big one! I have done that one — but I liked Crime & Punishment better. Good luck!
