Under the Dome by Stephen King
Friday Finds is hosted by Should Be Reading.
The blurb from the publisher:
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away.
Dale Barbara, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens — the town newspaper owner, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing to hold on to the reins of power, and his son. Because time isn’t just short… It’s running out.
First off, this isn’t really a ‘find’ because a lot of people know about it already and there’s been so much buzz over the cover art (which was released in stages) that it may even seem like old news but I am very excited about this book. Why? Well, in my college years I read a lot of King. I poured over all of his classic stuff including The Stand which to date, is his best novel yet. Don’t let its cheesy cover fool you, The Stand is really, really good.
After that, it seemed as if his writing got, well…weird. Not weird for King but weird in general. I didn’t care for any of his later books. However, Under the Dome is supposed to be his return to the classic style of writing that he is known for. I can’t wait! It comes out November 10th and I plan to read it over Thanksgiving weekend but I may not be able to wait that long. Is anyone else dying to read it?

I ought to read Stephen King. I have read only one book by him!
Here is my post: Friday Find: Waiting for Columbus by Thomas Trofimuk
Oohh, that sounds like I book I’d really enjoy!
I am a student of King for sure. I agree with you…the Stand is a modern classic, epic in scope. He did go off the path a bit. He went through that “angry woman” phase, then got really bizarre. He lost me at “The Cell”. But I would pick this up. In my heart I still love him.
You are right about The Cell. What the hell was he thinking??
My husband is a King fan and I just told him about this book. You’ve got him ready to go get it! I’m on the squeemish side when it comes to King’s type of books. It sounds character rich however, so maybe. We’ll see.
I haven’t heard of this book, but that doesn’t surprise me since I’m not a Stephen King fan. However, The Stand is the only Stephen King movie that I’ve actually liked (I’ve made it through The Shining, but that one’s still too scary for me).
Is it just me, or does this cover look a little bit like the dome in the Simpsons movie?
It does sort of have that look. I’m not sure I like the cover actually but it does make me want to read the book. That town looks very Stepford-ish.
I must be living under a rock because I didn’t know this was coming out. I really miss his old style of writing. The cover is amazing.
My husband is looking forward to this book.
I love the movies that come out of the books – I may wait for that!
I haven’t read King in forever, but will probably pick this one up. It will probably find its way into a movie at somepoint as well. Although – I can’t help but notice that he may have got the idea from the Simpson’s movie. While the Simpson’s movie was clearly a comedy and it was clear why there was a bubble around the town, something made my laugh when I saw the cover for the first time.
I guess we’ll see when it comes out.
Oh Nick, I hope this book doesn’t end up being a huge joke.
I am such a fan and dying is not the right word. I have already pre-ordered and will be shutting everything else out to read it right away. Dogs and cats may have to learn how to feed themselves. Okay, I will feed them!
IThis is the first I’ve heard of this book. I’m happy to read that it’s a return to his classic style because I read many of his books years ago and then, as you said, his writing got wierd. His books just weren’t as good anymore.
I laughed when I saw the dome in the picture and read the title because it reminded me of The Simpsons episode when Springfield was covered with a dome due to garbage problems. lol
Well, I must be living under a rock because I never heard about this at all. The cover art is quite striking and when King is “on,” he is fantastic!
I did the same thing with King. I read Cujo while riding the bus home from work then as soon as I got home I’d sit on the couch and read until suddenly it was dark and the neighbors’ dog was barking and I was jumping out of my skin! But I haven’t read any King in something like 20 years. Can’t wait to hear what you think of this one!
I haven’t read S. King in a long long time, but something about this book is drawing me to it. (Well the cover sure is appealing)..LOL
I can’t wait to read it, either! And I agree that the cover is appealing. Apparently the publisher hired artists who had worked in commercial advertising to do the design. It will definitely call attention from the shelves.
