Sunday Matters: Another Year Older

Sunday Matters

Yesterday was my birthday! To celebrate, we took a trip to the Central Coast which also happens to be where my son is. It’s a quick visit since he has to work too but it’s still nice to get away and see his new pad. He starts school soon so the timing is good.

Due to the Labor Day holiday it’s very crowded, as you can imagine and we are doing our best to social distance. The last time we were here was Father’s Day and it was packed then too. I’d like to come when it’s not packed.

Right Now:

We are going to grab some coffee and breakfast and then it’s back to the grind. Actually, youth group starts up again tonight on Zoom. We changed our meeting time to evenings so we shall see how it goes.

This Week:

I am off on Monday for Labor Day and I added Tuesday as a vacation day to extend my birthday weekend. I have nothing planned.

But… my daughter DID pass her driving test so thank you for the good wishes. She will be practicing some more and applying for jobs this week.

Reading:

The R.I.P Challenge is officially underway!! If you’d like to see what I plan to read check out my short list. I think the first book I will read for that is Heart-Shaped Box since it’s been on my list for years.

I am also still reading What Alice Forgot. It’s not pulling me in like her other books.

Watching:

My husband got me into a car restoration show. I call it Rust Bros because that is what’s on the intro but I guess it’s really called Rust Valley Restorers on Netflix. It is a fascinating show with some really interesting people. Even if you are not into cars, which I am not, I can appreciate the hunt for the right part… or the sentimental restoration of a beloved car. It’s a really good show.

Grateful for:

  • That my daughter passed her driving test!
  • My short trip to the Central Coast

Let me know how you are doing. We are all in this together and we need to continue to support one another. It’s a trying time for sure.

  1. Happy Birthday; so nice you got to see your son too. Congrats to your daughter on this huge milestone.

I have been drawn to non RIP titles this week — figures — actually, my reading is all over the place but, I loved loved The Vanishing Half (no review yet). Hope to finish One By One, Ruth Ware this weekend. It’s good but thought it would be a page turner and it is nor one for me.

Enjoy the rest of your time off.

  2. Happy birthday! We did the same thing yesterday – quick visit to see a kid and it’s so good for the soul. Glad you were able to do it.

    1. He ended up having to work most of the weekend but we still got to enjoy a couple of meals with him. That’s the benefit of staying at the hotel he works for. He was right there so could quickly run up and take a break.

  3. Happy Belated Birthday!!! I’m in a mini reading slump. Hopefully, Oona Out of Order pulls me in. Hope you write a review of the new Clegg book. nI have it on reserve at the library.

  4. Happy Birthday! Mine is on the 21rst and I hope it is cooler here in LA by then. Listened to Gods in Alabama and really enjoyed it Also He said/she said. Audible just did an Amazon Prime thingy -included free with your subscription and there is a substantial amount of free reads on it. Started watching Away on Netflix and it is good but really low key. Hoping there is a little more action in future episodes. I find it ironic that the library I had such a hard time getting a parking spot at now reserves one for me!

    1. The library saving you a parking spot is pretty cool. You must be there a lot!

The weather has been horrid. When we drove back from San Luis Obispo and stopped in Fillmore for gas, it was 120. I felt like my face was melting off. And because we were gone all weekend it took a long time for our house to get cool enough to be comfortable since we turned the AC off when we left. Plus, the smoke from the fires. It’s so ugly out right now.

  5. Happy Birthday! From Instagram, it looks like you had a lovely visit with your son and it must feel good to have a change of scene right now as well. Enjoy the RIP challenge. I never join, but like seeing what people are reading.

    1. We did have a nice visit and the hotel he works at, where we stayed was so nice. They are dog friendly so my pup was loving life. My son ended up having to work on my actual bday because they are having some staffing issues but he still made it to dinner so that was nice. It’s always hard to leave him behind though. Even my pup is sad.

  6. Happy Birthday! So glad you got to visit your son and go somewhere fun, even if it was a little crowded.

Congratulations to your daughter on passing her driving test! Phew, now that’s behind and the non-stop worries anytime she’s behind the wheel starts?

    1. Thank you for the birthday wishes! It was very nice to see my son. The hotel he works at is so nice. We had a very nice stay there.

The first time my daughter drove away on her own, a trip to the coffee shop to work on college apps, I was a bit anxious. It wasn’t far but still. She has now been out a handful of times and I am still on edge.

  7. Happy belated birthday, Tina. Hope you had fun over the weekend and are continuing to have fun today. I’ve been off Instagram for the weekend, but I look forward to catching up with your trip when I return tomorrow.

    1. Thank you. It was a good weekend overall. I was sad that my son got stuck working on my bday but it turned out okay in the end and now they’ve hired two people over the weekend so he should be a little less stressed soon. It was college move-in day so there were a lot of people in town but there was a good vibe all around even though it was so dreadfully hot.

  8. Glad you had a good birthday Tina!

Congrats to your daughter on passing her driving test!

I used to watch all kinds of car shows with my husband. One of our favorites was Monster Garage with Jesse James.

I’ve worked overtime due to a co-worker being out but am off tomorrow which I’m very thankful for. My job is hard and my body wants a rest.

I hope you have a great week!

    1. I’m glad you are able to take today off to rest. It’s a dismal day here. Hot and the fires have made the air quality just horrible. It’s literally yellow outside. I am so glad I took today off as well. Not feeling it today. I just plan to tidy up and read a little. Tidying up calms me down for some reason.

  9. Sounds like a good way to celebrate your birthday. Glad your daughter passed her driving test, that’s a big step. I hope everything else goes well. We went to the community pool for the last day of the season. It was a bit crowded compare to other days we’ve been but not as many as usually show up when there are not capacity restrictions — somehow I am being talked into volunteering for the pool board…so we’ll see how that goes.

Have a great week. Back to work for me.

  10. Happy belated birthday! I hope you are stretching it thru today. And congrats to your daughter for being an official driver now! Hope your trip was good.

    1. I was very antsy and unsettled yesterday so it’s probably good I took the day off from work. Once I settled down enough I took a much needed nap which helped.

Work has been okay so far. Catching up on missed emails.

About three quarters of the way done with Joe Hill’s Heart Shaped Box. It’s gotten way creepy. Definitely a good pick for the RIP Challenge.

  11. My husband has been watching that very same restoration show. I struggle with it because I’m not certain I like the two main restorers. One has no business sense, which drives me batty, and the other has a horrible laugh. But he loves it, and I can see the appeal.

    1. Okay, the one without business sense, Mike, reminds me of our stage director for community theatre so I enjoy his antics. The other guy reminds me of someone too and his laugh and sense of humor is what keeps me watching. Did you happen to see the one with his mom? She could have her own show. I like that they are essentially good people. Mike loses a lot of money on projects because he gets sentimental like when he restored a car for a man who lost his daughter in a car accident. I think he kicked in about 20K of his own money to finish that one.

  12. Happy belated Birthday, Ti. I am glad you were able to visit your son and get in some fun time. Yay to your daughter passing her driver’s exam!

    1. Well you read it some time ago. I can’t remember what I’ve read even six months ago. Hence, the need to blog. Alice started off rough for me but I did appreciate that people change and mature and I like second chances when they end well. But from other reviews it’s clearly not her best.
