My Friday Rambling

This has been a pretty good week. I thought it was going to be all kinds of crazy after being off for so long but all was good. Next week the kids return to school so homework will once again plague me. I know why they have it and I have no problem with THEM doing it but inevitably, I end up helping probably more than I should since the organizational skills of my youngest leave a lot to be desired. If she brings the work home, that’s always good because she usually leaves it in her desk which prompts me to send messages to the other parents trying to get the assignment.

Other things on my mind right now:

  • My broken tooth (which I didn’t even know was broken) will be capped tomorrow. Yep! A Saturday and will required another Saturday in two weeks to complete the process. I cannot stand dental work. I wish I could just wake up and have the whole thing done but that isn’t how it works.
  • Production week for The Music Man is looming. It’s the week of January 28th but I am getting a little antsy. The kids usually do alright but I get a little wound-up with the massive prep involved and making sure they are where they need to be. Two casts schedules to juggle since The Boy is in all shows and The Girl is in three. Plus, I work backstage. That part I actually like but I worry about getting the props to the right kid, etc.
  • I am announcing a read-along next week. It’s early but hopefully with the advanced notice many of you will be able to join me.

What am I reading?

I am finishing up Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. I am in the final pages.  I am also reading Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Fountain’s book but I am liking it. It’s a slow build for me though. I am about ten chapters in and it’s starting to get good.

That’s pretty much it. No big plans for the weekend besides the dentist and watching some football. What are you reading this weekend? Any big plans?

The Sunday Salon – October 26, 2008

It’s been a really nice weekend even though I haven’t gotten a whole lot accomplished. Last night one of my daughter’s classmates invited her over to see his Halloween decorations. It was a nice little party. She had a good time and so did I. My husband and son came home from Six Flags exhausted but they had fun too.

Today, we had planned to do something like hit a museum or zoo but my son just woke up (11am) and now I feel as if half the day is gone. We will head out for some lunch and then probably pick up some pumpkins as I have yet to do that. I’m also cooking chili in the crock pot for dinner. The house smells wonderful. Mmmmm.

While I was waiting for everyone to wake up I picked up Creepers, by Joanne Dahme. I won this book from Booking Mama and Geri over at Running Press. It’s a YA book but I am enjoying it. Just the right amount of creepiness for this pre-Halloween weekend.

What’s on your plate today?

Bookstore Romp

Happy Saturday! It’s like summer here today. My husband and son went to Six Flags while I stayed with Kidlet #2. We went to lunch and then headed to the bookstore. We missed story time but we didn’t care. Outfitted with my free cappuccino and a sugar cookie for the Kidlet, we headed to the children’s section.

We spent a few hours reading all of the books that caught my daughter’s eye but there were so many books that I wanted, that I didn’t walk out with any of them.

As I was typing this, I just heard my daughter coloring with a marker and lo and behold…guess what she was doing? Writing in the new book I JUST BOUGHT HER. Not happy about that! Planned to say a few more things but that will have to wait a bit.

Oh, To Be A Kid Again!

On my way to work this morning, I stopped off at the local 24hr Super Walmart and picked up the bike my daughter wants for her bday. I know people have their views on Walmart, but I love that this one is 24hrs and the inventory clerk that helped me put the bike together for me (because I neglected to check if they had it there beforehand) in 20 min! Tried to tip him but he wouldn’t take it. Against the rules, blah blah.

Anyway, as I was checking out the toy shelves at 6:15am, I came across this new game. I LOVED Twister as a kid and this looks like so much fun! Check out the video here. I think I have to have it! I mean, I think my DAUGHTER has to have it.

Nothing like starting off your Friday as the toy store. Oh, the memories… What do you all have planned for the weekend? I am actually staying home to catch-up on stuff. My son has a book report due where he needs to re-enact all the key plot points and take pictures for a special display board. He read a Sherlock Holmes novel, Fall of the Amazing Zalindas, so all the pics have to do with tightrope walking, circus stuff and I get to dress up like a gypsy. We started taking the pics yesterday. Hope to finish the rest this weekend.

We are also running lines and practicing songs for The Music Man. Auditions are Wednesday. Crossing my fingers for him.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Hello Weekend

The weekend is finally here. Boy, has it been a long week! People have been asking me for stuff at work (the nerve) and then school started for the kids so my world has been a bit chaotic. My little one just cannot get going in the morning without a battle. Grrrr.

Tonight is the big PTO Spaghetti & Bingo night. Yes, I am also on PTO and this is one of the events that the kids (and parents) really get a kick out of. We’ll be dishing out pasta and calling out numbers and hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy a little bit of time with my own family. My son is just dying to call out the numbers. We shall see.

My friend had a big “back to school” pool party planned for this weekend but it had to be cancelled at the last minute, so my weekend is open. My husband has some special training he has to go to on Sunday (yep, a Sunday) so the age old question comes up. What do I do with the kids? I sort of just want to stay home and hang out but they always get bored. I don’t get kids. They always have to be doing something 24/7. I could easily spend the entire weekend just moping around relaxing.

I guess that is the different between kids and an almost forty-year-old.
