The Sunday Salon: The Walkers Return

Sunday Salon

It was a short week for me since I had Monday and Tuesday off and yet…it still felt incredibly long.

We had some fun stuff going on. The Teen’s choir Cabaret concert was on Wednesday and Thursday. It was a fun show. And…The Teen DID get the part he wanted in Annie (Rooster), Ms. Hannigan’s good-for-nothing con-man brother. The Girl did not get what she wanted but she ended up with a featured dance part.

The Teen was invited to USC for a singing workshop which he unfortunately had to leave early for since he had a lead acting workshop scheduled later in the day but I think it was a good experience for him. Being on a large college campus and getting to hang out with the music director? Very cool.

In other news…

I thought The Girl’s cheer clinic was yesterday, but it’s TODAY. This morning, to be exact which means if we go to church, it’s going to have to be an evening service. Might not be a bad thing as I’ve been wanting to try an evening service.

But, who am I kidding? This weekend is ALL about the return of The Walking Dead. Yes! It’s back! I think tonight’s episode is going to be rough. I fear for the characters. I will be off social media from 6pm on to avoid spoilers.

What am I reading?

I am listening to Stephen King’s Big Driver and reading Garth Stein’s A Sudden Light. I am liking both, quite a bit. I did not know that Big Driver was coming to Lifetime though later this week. I am also reading Something Wicked This Way Comes for the read along I am hosting with Sandy.

What am I cooking?

I made all sorts of stuff yesterday. Chicken Taco/Enchilada soup and chili and corn bread. The chili and corn bread will be enjoyed later. I didn’t want anything to distract me from The Walking Dead so that stuff is cooked and ready to go Just needs warming.

Just now, I made myself a bowl of coconut Chobani Greek yogurt, added some gluten-free raw oats, some dark chocolate shavings, sliced raw almonds and sprinkled the top with toasted coconut. Divine.

What am I watching?

Later I will be balled up on the couch cringing, while watching The Walking Dead hoping with all hope to not lose a major character in the season opening. Will you be watching tonight?

The Sunday Salon: What a Week

Sunday Salon

It’s been a rough week. The Girl was sick-ish last week and guess what? Even with my excellent preventative measures, I am a walking petri dish right now. I can’t really figure out how I caught what she had because I hardly ever catch colds but I did. Monday, I knew I was a goner but was in denial and Tuesday was much worse but since I was alone in the office, I figured I’d tough it out and drown myself in cold meds and tea and hope for the best.

I am still sick though. The low-grade fever continues to linger which is not bad enough to make me bed-ridden but just enough to throw me off my game. I can still read but not without a lot of Sudafed. I’d go to the doctor but everyone seems to have this same head cold. There’s nothing that can be done. I just need to let it run its course.

But, the kids got through their first round of auditions for Annie. The callback list comes out Tuesday afternoon. Let’s hope they get to go another round. The Girl was coming off of her head cold, so her voice was a tad scratchy but I think for the most part, she got through it okay.

What am I reading?

I am still reading The Bone Clocks and finishing up Fahrenheit 451, which I started for Banned Books Week. But soon, I will be reading Something Wicked This Way Comes. More details on that below.

What am I cooking?

I am so done cooking! I made five dozen brownies for the choir bake sale and twenty or so fruit loop necklaces. I do have to go to the store later because I think my kids are sick of cereal and I have a tiny craving for Chicken Alfredo.

What am I watching?

I watched an adorable movie that just happened to be on, Definitely, Maybe. It was so darn cute! Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin. Adorable. Not sure what I’ll watch today.

Now for some exciting news.

Our read along for Something Wicked This Way Comes (hashtag #EnterTheRingmaster) starts this Wednesday, October 1st. Did you find a copy? Did you sign-up? Because there is still time to read this Bradbury classic with Sandy and I.

Something Wicked cover

Here is a little taste of what it’s about:

The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early. The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two boys will discover the secret of its smoke, mazes, and mirrors; two friends who will soon know all too well the heavy cost of wishes. . .and the stuff of nightmares (Indiebound).

How can you resist?? Freaky carnival action? I am so there.

Friday – The Best Day of the Week

Grab Your BookThe students return to the university next week and all this week, I have been prepping for their return. I am in communications so the week prior to the semester is a busy, busy time. I sort of fell off the edge of the earth. Or so it seems. This week has been a total blur but it’s finally Friday and although next week will be busy, it will be busy in a totally different way.

It’s been difficult to get much reading in but I’ve been snatching time here and there. I am in the final stretch with the Murakami book and I think I am going to start The Little Friend and I must also start Twelve Years a Slave as it was my book club pick and I have yet to read it.

What are you reading?

Also, it’s been very nice this week weather wise. Too bad I have been stuck in this building for most of it but I did feel a tiny tinge of fall in the air when I left the other night. This little taste of fall has me excited for all sorts of things:

  • Candles (I am a candle girl, light ‘em up!)
  • Pumpkin anything
  • Homemade soup!
  • Holiday coffee drinks
  • The super-fun October read-along that Sandy and I have planned (details to come)
  • Thanksgiving (yep, I am thinking about it)

What are you excited about?

The Sunday Salon: Long Weekend

Sunday Salon

It is Sunday! Glorious Sunday. I especially love Sundays when I do not have to work on Monday, and that is the case this week.

We are still dealing with warm weather. It was 86 degrees yesterday but we are also dealing with epic winds. Wind, paired with high heat and furloughed firefighters is not a good combination. The Teen wanted to decorate the house for Halloween this weekend, but if the winds don’t die down it won’t happen. He’s a tad disappointed, It’s one of his favorite things to do.

Other than that, we made Pumpkin bread and I will be pulling out the inside decor for now. Maybe that will put us in the mood.

What am I reading?

I am not ploughing through books like I used to. LIFE continues to get into the way and my focus is not there, but I am almost done with The Interestings and Doctor Sleep. Both, very good. My mind just isn’t able to concentrate these days.

Oh a good note, The Teen read Joyland and then asked me to buy him another King book. Wha?? Did I hear that right? So, we picked up The Shining and no, I didn’t own a copy because I gave it away! Now, I will probably need to buy a hard copy of Doctor Sleep because mine is a Kindle copy and he already told me that he wants to read it right after. This made me happy in ways that you cannot believe. Reading is not his thing.

What am I cooking?

Tonight? Nothing. We are taking The Girl out for her 10th birthday dinner She has a craving for ribs so ribs she shall have. Her birthday is actually tomorrow but they have rehearsal tomorrow night. Yep, during fall break but we knew this early on. So tomorrow we are taking the day off to celebrate with her but a nice dinner out will be enjoyed tonight.

What am I watching?

We watched The Jerk again last night and we have been watching Emergency on Netflix. Remember that show? I could watch it all day long.

What are you doing today?

The Sunday Salon: Disco Lives

What a weekend. The Boy had his stuff going on, that summer class from hell and the Quinceanera that he committed himself to. So, the rest of us took off for a concert at the park. This week’s band was a called Boogie Knights. Probably the most popular act of the summer series. Disco revival groups can never go wrong. Disco lives! There were thousands of people in attendance.

Concerts at the Park - Boogie Knights

The Girl had her watermelon. The only requirement for the night.

The Girl and her Watermelon

The Hub. He likes Disco.

The Girl, dancing.

The Girl Dancing

The Band, as seen from the mosh pit. The sun was going down, which only allowed me to capture a silhouette, but can you check out the hair?

Boogie Knights

Here’s a short video clip! Pardon the shaky hand. I was dancing! That’s me yelling in the background and check out the end of the clip for some butt action. Not from me!

What am I reading?

I am not making too much progress with any of my reading this week. I am still reading The Curiosity. It started off strong but it’s petering out for me. I hope it picks up.

I have to start Bait, which came to me a little late for the tour I am on. Knowing how I have been with my reading lately, I am going to have to get to it this week if I want to get it read and reviewed before my tour date. But school starts this week for my kids so who knows what will happen?

What am I cooking?

Not sure yet. I have to hit the market as once again I have no food in the house! Maybe tacos?

What am I watching?

I want to see a silly movie. Maybe Funny Farm with Chevy Chase? I love that movie.

What do you have planned for today?

My Friday Rambling

This has been a pretty good week. I thought it was going to be all kinds of crazy after being off for so long but all was good. Next week the kids return to school so homework will once again plague me. I know why they have it and I have no problem with THEM doing it but inevitably, I end up helping probably more than I should since the organizational skills of my youngest leave a lot to be desired. If she brings the work home, that’s always good because she usually leaves it in her desk which prompts me to send messages to the other parents trying to get the assignment.

Other things on my mind right now:

  • My broken tooth (which I didn’t even know was broken) will be capped tomorrow. Yep! A Saturday and will required another Saturday in two weeks to complete the process. I cannot stand dental work. I wish I could just wake up and have the whole thing done but that isn’t how it works.
  • Production week for The Music Man is looming. It’s the week of January 28th but I am getting a little antsy. The kids usually do alright but I get a little wound-up with the massive prep involved and making sure they are where they need to be. Two casts schedules to juggle since The Boy is in all shows and The Girl is in three. Plus, I work backstage. That part I actually like but I worry about getting the props to the right kid, etc.
  • I am announcing a read-along next week. It’s early but hopefully with the advanced notice many of you will be able to join me.

What am I reading?

I am finishing up Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. I am in the final pages.  I am also reading Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Fountain’s book but I am liking it. It’s a slow build for me though. I am about ten chapters in and it’s starting to get good.

That’s pretty much it. No big plans for the weekend besides the dentist and watching some football. What are you reading this weekend? Any big plans?

The Sunday Salon – October 26, 2008

It’s been a really nice weekend even though I haven’t gotten a whole lot accomplished. Last night one of my daughter’s classmates invited her over to see his Halloween decorations. It was a nice little party. She had a good time and so did I. My husband and son came home from Six Flags exhausted but they had fun too.

Today, we had planned to do something like hit a museum or zoo but my son just woke up (11am) and now I feel as if half the day is gone. We will head out for some lunch and then probably pick up some pumpkins as I have yet to do that. I’m also cooking chili in the crock pot for dinner. The house smells wonderful. Mmmmm.

While I was waiting for everyone to wake up I picked up Creepers, by Joanne Dahme. I won this book from Booking Mama and Geri over at Running Press. It’s a YA book but I am enjoying it. Just the right amount of creepiness for this pre-Halloween weekend.
