I’ve Stepped Into The City

The City & The City

See this book? It has intimidated me for a long time. Well, more specifically, this author scares the hell out of me. I don’t know what it is but every time I pick up one of his books I feel as if I just won’t “get it” and then put it down again.

However, Care and a handful of other bloggers got the idea to read it together this summer. Not a formal read-along because I don’t do well with those, but an informal one where we read one half, chat about it and then read the other half and chat some more. If I get through this book, I will consider it an accomplishment because I haven’t been able to get through it before. I think most of the discussion will take place on Twitter and you can find the discussions with the new hashtag #SitCatC.

Anyway, wish me luck. I’ve got a lot going on this summer and it is not at all the breezy summer I had hoped it to be, but I’m game. I’ve already read a few chapters and so far, so good.

  1. Good luck. I have not heard of this author before. I must be living in a cave!

    • He’s written some very popular books (Embassytown, Kraken) and then this one. Lots of readers find him challenging, but enjoy his writing. We’ll see!

  2. That sounds like fun and manageable, too!

  3. Have seen his books around and am eager to hear how your group likes this one.

  4. Good luck! I have a feeling you’ll enjoy it.

  5. Welcome to the readalong! I’m joining too. This is my first book by this author and it looks interesting.

  6. This is probably the most accessible of his books. No reason at all to be intimidated! (and how can a reader of Murakami be intimidated by ANYone?!!! LOL)

  7. YAY! I don’t really know enough about Mr. China so am not intimidated. uh oh? I think this will be fun.

  8. Seriously, what Jill said! If you can read Murakami, you can read this guy! I listened to this one on audio, and it was…challenging. Primarily BECAUSE it was on audio. I had to pay attention. But I loved it. So so clever, this man. I need to read more of him.

  9. Good luck, sounds like a challenge, but you can do it (if you want). But then again it is summer, so dont kill yourself on tough reads

  10. Good luck! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on this one!!!

  11. I enjoyed this one however I can’t seem to get into any of his other books.

  12. Good luck Ti! Heard so much about China Meville, I’ll be listening to what you have to say and decide if I want to read his books!

  13. Have fun with this one Ti. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read your thoughts about it.

  14. Good luck Ti! Like Serena, I’ve not heard of the author but if it scares you then I’m steering clear of it. Lol.

  15. I so wanted to join you guys with this one but I’ve just got too many review books (again!) that I need to get to. Can’t wait to see what everyone thinks of it.

  16. I’ll be curious to get your take on it. I didn’t think it was difficult to read, but his writing style wasn’t my favorite. I did think the setting was fascinating though.

    • I am at Chapter 12 right now and to me, it just seems as if he is saying the same thing over and over again. The set-up is taking awhile.
