Opening Round: The Tournament of Books 2012

Today is a very exciting day! It’s the opening round for The Tournament of Books! It took a really long time for them to update their site, but it’s all updated now and the first round between The Sense of an Ending and The Devil All the Time has been posted.

I’ve been aware of the tournament for a few years now and although I have enjoyed many of the books, and some have become favorites of mine (Model Home for example), I never read ALL of the books chosen. So far, I have read four of them (1Q84, The Marriage Plot, The Cat’s Table, The Stranger’s Child [DNF]) and I plan to read five more (Swamplandia!, Salvage the Bones, The Art of Fielding, The Sense of an Ending, The Tiger’s Wife). The others don’t really catch my eye.  However, depending on what is going on I might chip away at the remaining seven.

If you are not familiar with this event, I urge you to check it out. Books duking it out for the win. Judges keeping it fun. I love this event! Stop by today to see who won round one! Oh, and later… there will even be a Zombie round where one book, previously eliminated…will be resurrected!!! Very exciting!

  1. I have never heard of this tournament before. Thanks for the post.

  2. Never ever heard of it but it sounds like fun…

  3. Zombie round!! That is too awesome!

  4. I am planning on reading a lot of the books featured this time around, which is different for me. It will be interesting to follow along and see what they have to say about some of the contenders. Thanks for sharing this with everybody!

  5. I’m so bad about reading books from these things. But I do have Swamplandia on audio and Art of Fielding on my shelves…

    • I started Art of Fielding when I first got the galley but my daughter spilled water all over it and so I will have to check it out from the library to read it. I must say, the Tournament books are usually fun… not fun like “shits and giggles” fun but fun in that they pose interesting questions and are always matched up against books you’d never guess to match them up against.

  6. I always feel well read until I see a list of so many books I haven’t read yet, Now most of the books in the tournament are on my reading list I just have gotten to any but The Sense of Ending (loved it). What a fun idea, though–love the zombie round.

    • As you can see, my beloved Murakami’s 1Q84 is going up against The Last Brother (which I haven’t read). I sure hope 1Q84 wins!

  7. I am vaguely familiar with the Tournament of Books but didn’t know too much about it before. Definitely worth following. Thanks for the reminder!

  8. The Devil of All Time sounds, um, ugh! I do hope to get to the Barnes book one of these days….

  9. This does sounds like fun!

  10. I have read 1Q84. I am now reading Swamplandia.

  11. I haven’t read many of the books, but just the commentary makes me happy.

  12. More books to add to my out-of-control list! :D
